Description

The story of how I met my wife is the story of my first time wearing a dress. That might sound weird but hear me out.

I went to a comic con that was occurring in my hometown. I was a big fan of comics, cartoons, and movies. I loved to be around people who knew the stuff I liked. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean I get friends. I also enjoyed cosplaying. It’s like halloween, except there’s a main theme, and each cosplay is like an easter egg. I had brought a Link costume, and I was pretty excited. I was hoping to get a Space Dandy T-shirt signed. I put all my stuff in my duffel bag, my costume, my badge with my ID, and my wallet. I got in the convention and saw the pure nerdiness surrounding the convention hall. I don’t put my  costume on until I get in, and find a bathroom. Thats so I don’t walk around town or go on the bus wearing plastic elf ears. I went through the crowds of people who wanted autographs. I went to the unisex bathroom, seeing lines around the men’s. Nobody was in the unisex stalls. I went the the closest stall and took my shirt and pants off. I went down to my briefs and put my clothes on the floor. Then I opened the duffel bag. It was apparent when I opened it that it wasn’t mine.

When I opened the bag, pink curls flowed out. I was confused, and started to search the duffel bag. The pink curly wig was pretty ginormous. Also, I found a large white dress, with a large crystal on the torso region. I then realized quickly that the costume in the bag was of Rose Quartz, from Steven Universe. There was also a bag that had some money, a journal, a makeup kit, and the owner’s ID badge. It belonged to someone named Becky Callison. I didn’t know who she was, but I had her stuff.

I wasn’t sure how this happened, but I just decided to put my clothes back on. BUT they were sopping wet, because the stall next to mine was leaking. I debated with myself a bit about what to do. I wasn’t even a really big fan of Steven Universe. I mean, how would “Becky” feel when this nice costume would go to waste. I decided the only thing I could do with no clothes. I put on some random girl’s clothes. I had no other real choice. I put the silky dress and the giant wig on, and felt the rustling of the puffy white dress. Me, being the lover of cosplay, knew how to put on makeup, but it was usually how to do Darth Maul. I looked at my phone, and looked up how to put makeup on (for girls) and also learned how to put some makeup on to make it look like I had breasts. Finally, I looked in the mirror, and I don’t mean to brag, but I think I did a good job. I would just take this stuff off when I got to my apartment.

Then I realized, that the bag I had lost, it had all my stuff, including my room key and ID! What was I going to do? I looked at Becky’s stuff, and opened the journal. She had planned her entire day here. I realized that I might be able to find her by going to the places she was going to! So, I walked out of the bathroom, taking the bag with me. I was lucky this was a convention. I mean, I thought I looked like a girl (which I still wasn’t excited about), but if anybody thought I was a guy, then it was no big deal. There was a ton of cross players who went to these things. As I headed to the Cartoon Network booths, people looked at me, but just for a moment, as there was another cool cosplayer around the corner. Some people even asked for pictures. There was a Pearl cosplayer who took a picture with me who kissed me on the cheek. I wasn’t even sure if she knew I was a guy or if it was just a Pearl thing. At the Cartoon Network booth, I got a free comic and an autograph from Ian Jones-Quarterly. He was really nice, and I was really excited for OK KO.

I looked around for Becky, before I realize that I didn’t even know what she looked like! I was screwed. What would I do? I decided that even though I didn’t know Becky, I would try to get the stuff she wanted with her money, because from her journal,  she was really passionate about a number of things. Yeah it would suck that I wouldn’t go to the booths that I wanted to, but I wanted to help. I bought the stuff that she wanted from the numerous stores, went to other booths, took more pictures, and I even decided that when she didn’t have enough money for a Ramna 1/2 poster (which was relatable to me), I paid for it myself. If I found her, I would give it to her. But, as I started to think about it, would she be mad? I was wearing her costume, posing as her. What if she thought I was a creep? I was slowly getting depressed.

Then, after all that, the final thing on her schedule was a… COSPLAY CONTEST? I was sweating buckets, and it wasn’t just because of the giant pink wig. Would they even let me in? I went to the booth, and I registered. The man at front asked if I wanted to be in the CROSS play competition, and I stammered out no, and pointed out my ID said I was female.. Everyone at the convention was at the costume contest. I sat in the crowd, next to a One Punch Man cosplayer, and someone dressed as Laura Croft. The host, who was actually JJ frickin' Abrams(!) announced the winners for the different categories. When it came to the women’s competition, I heard them call a RWBY cosplayer for third. I clapped, then heard that “Becky Callison, dressed as Rose Quartz, won second place!”. I stood up as everyone clapped and then I saw someone stand up as well. It was her.

She was a short haired girl about my age with a violet streak in her hair. She was a bit on the heavy side, but not fat. She was wearing my Link costume, and because I was smaller than her, she was pulling off a “sexy” Link. She looked at me, and I saw she had very defined features, and was beautiful. My heart fluttered a bit. I was infatuated.

People were still clapping, and the One Punch guy was telling me to go up. I went on stage and was given a trophy. After a bit, I went down to find her. She was standing there nervously, twirling her hair. I was really nervous. I somehow found the courage to give her her bag. She looked inside, and lit up a bit as she saw all the stuff she was hoping to buy. She smiled at me, and gave me my bag. I looked inside and saw my Space Dandy t-shirt signed by Shinichirō Watanabe, the creator of Space Dandy. I wasn’t sure what to say to her. So using my limited Steven Universe knowledge, I said, ”Space Train to the Cosmos?”

She started to laugh and said “yeah”. We left the convention center and changed our clothes back. We talked at a local cafe for hours. She actually lived in an apartment a couple buildings over from mine. She made me laugh. She got all of my jokes. I thought she was just great. No, she was perfect.

Me and Becky got married a year and a half later. We were so happy, and we had built a meaningful relationship, not one just built on tv shows. She would joke that I should wear the wedding dress, and that I would always be the pretty one. That year, we went to the convention as Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers. People commented on our awesome costumes, and we won the costume contest for couples. This is a picture of us. I’m the one on the right. pre02.deviantart.net/787a/th/p…
